Variety, the Children’s Charity has been improving the lives of disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK for the past 75 years. They provided specialist equipment and confidence building experiences that help to empower and enable young people to live their best lives and feel more included in society. The Barbour Foundation has provided Variety with the funding to equip Cockfield Primary School near Bishop Aukland with a new 17-seater Sunshine Coach which will enable over 100 pupils to travel safely with their friends to a variety of new activities, including sports, leisure activities and residential trips.

During a visit in June, we got to learn first-hand from the students about the exciting trips and excursions they had used the coach for and hear about impact it had made on their learning. A group of pupils had used the coach to travel and compete with their home made go cart in races with other schools across the county, another group told us about their trips to local beaches and wildlife areas. The children were all smalls and giggles as they relieved their stories from these trips and had even made a mini sunshine coach out of cardboard to celebrate the visit.

“Cockfield Primary School will use their Sunshine Coach to increase out-of-classroom opportunities for their children to develop their learning and ensure that every child has the chance to get involved with their community, enjoy new experiences and grow.”

Nicky Wright, Head Teacher at Cockfield Primary School

The coach will continue to play an important role in these children’s growth and education as well as helping the rural school to enrich its curriculum and expand its learning opportunities for future classes.
