The Barbour Foundation are excited to announce our support for North East Solidarity and Teaching (N.E.S.T) at Newcastle University Students’ Union. Through a student led initiative, they provide free English lessons, skills development and community activities for refugees, asylum seekers and other forcibly displaced people across the North East. Each language skills class is designed and delivered by student volunteers from Newcastle university and is helping to support over 500 participants from all parts of the world to provide opportunity, dignity and participation in society for all.

N.E.S.T. Is so special to me. It is a place of true community where together we laugh, share cultures and stories. It is so much more than an English school, it has become a 2nd family

Libby, Project Coordinator

They offered me language sessions every day which helped me build a good vocabulary, increased my knowledge, and helped me to be prepared for my OET exam

B1 learner

As N.E.S.T approaches its 10-year anniversary, we are incredibly grateful to the Barbour Foundation for this generous grant and the opportunities it will create for both our learners and our student volunteers. This support will make a real difference in helping us continue to grow our impact, providing meaningful learning experiences for our learners while also giving our student volunteers valuable opportunities to develop their confidence, leadership skills and real-world experience working within the community

Phil Hay – NUSU Senior Opportunities Coordinator & N.E.S.T founder
